PLAYER RATINGS | AS Monaco V RC Lens, Seko Fofana imperious in comfortable victory

Posted on March 16, 2023 by FASHIONISLANDBLOG

Ligue 1 22/23, Round 3, 20/08/22

AS Monaco – 1

Alexander Nübel – 3 – The Bayern Munich loanee had a difficult start to life at the Stade Louis II last season, but recovered to have a positive campaign. However, questions will once again start to be posed about Nübel, who conceded four of the six shots on target. He will be particularly disappointed to have conceded the fourth at his near post.

Vanderson – 3 – A nightmare match for the Brazilian ended in a red late in the second half. Having signed a contract extension earlier in the week, he was at fault for Lens’ second goal and didn’t offer as much in attack as he often does.

Benoît Badiashile – 5

Axel Disasi – 5

Caio Henrique – 5

Jean Lucas – 4

Eliot Matazo – 3 – The young Belgian couldn’t play himself into the game. A diminutive figure, who was marked out of the game by Lens’ three midfielders, especially Seko Fofana, which made it difficult for Monaco to progress the ball through the middle of the park. He wasn’t helped out by the numerical disadvantage in the midfield, but he was understandably hooked at half-time.

Wissam Ben Yedder – 4

Takumi Minamino – 3 – It’s still early for Minamino at Monaco, but currently he looks out of step with his teammates. Largely anonymous, when he was involved, Minamino wasn’t a source of creativity and he was rightly brought off just before the hour mark. Improvement is needed if he is to become the key player that Monaco thought that they had bought.

Krépin Diatta – 5

Breel Embolo – 6

Others: Mohamed Camara (5), Aleksandr Golovin (4), Ismail Jakobs (4), Malang Sarr (4)

RC Lens – 4

Brice Samba – 7 – He wasn’t called into action often, but the former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper was involved in one of the most important moments of the match. Lens had just gone 3-1 up and Monaco were pushing to get back in the match. At that moment, Samba stepped up to make the key save from Wissam Ben Yedder and deny the home side an immediate route back into the match.

Deiver Machado – 8

Kevin Danso – 7

Facundo Medina  – 7

Jonathan Gradit – 7

Seko Fofana – 9 – Imperious in the midfield. As well as emphatically converting his spot-kick, he controlled the rhythm of the game, punctuating it with moments of trickery and class. He looked a step above everyone else on the pitch and through controlling the midfield in both attacking and defensive phases, he essentially dictated the end result.

David Costa – 8 – Costa was a free man in the midfield for almost the entire game. Whilst Franck Haise should rightly be praised for constructing a numerical overload in the midfield, Costa’s use of the ball in possession was nonetheless impressive.

Salis Abdul Samed – 7

Przemyslaw Frankowski – 7

Florian Sotoca – 7

Ikoma-Ioïs Openda – 7

Others: Ignatius Ganago (6), Wesley Saïd (8), Jimmy Cabot (6), Massadio Haïdara (7), Patrick Berg (6)
