A recent graduate of the Royal College of Art, London-based Taiwanese designer Apu Jan has already caught the eye of several editors and shown up on the radar as a name to watch. This week, Jan kicked off the Fashion Scout schedule at London Fashion Week, with his collection receiving no shortage of praise. Though it has only been a few months since Jan formally founded his eponymous collection, his work is most certainly not lacking in professionalism, with the Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, “Petroleum” putting a modern spin on traditional Asian design elements.
As Jan’s show sheet put it, “The collection has taken inspiration from the darkest depths of the ocean,” but the use of strong color is still there, with cobalt blues mixing and melding with whites. Jan’s longevity is assured into next season as he embraced one of the key trends, monochrome. With muted graphic prints, soft tailoring, and a simple aesthetic Jan’s A/W collection is clearly well thought-out and technically executed.
Jing Daily caught a rare moment with the shy designer after the show where he told us, “My signature black knitwear is inspired by traditional Eastern formal dress. [I’m] delighted to have been able to be the first to showcase at Fashion Scout as part of London Fashion Week”
