— On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that Finn Balor vs. Brock Lesnar was always the original plan for the Royal Rumble and the idea actually originated soon after the Crown Jewel PPV last year. At the time, the idea was for Strowman vs. Lesnar, but Vince McMahon “began thinking about it” and decided that he didn’t want Strowman to beat Lesnar and instead Brock would keep his title until WrestleMania and go on to face Seth Rollins.
— This report goes on to say that once it was decided that Strowman wasn’t going to win, WWE also didn’t want Braun to lose again and Vince felt that the only logical choice was Finn Balor – someone who Brock Lesnar actually wanted to work with dating back to last year as he likes to work with guys like Balor and AJ Styles as he has his best matches with them. Meltzer stressed that while Strowman isn’t yet medically cleared to wrestle and it doesn’t appear as if he will be in action at the PPV, the moves last night didn’t happen because of Braun’s health. He also added that WWE kept advertising Strowman/Lesnar due to ticket sales.
