Despite the 9:oo a.m. Monday morning start, the room was packed for Sean Suen’s fashion show presented by GQ China on the final day of London Collections: Men. Clearly, Suen is worth getting out of bed for, and his immaculate Autumn/Winter 2016 collection displays the importance of Chinese menswear in London and on the global stage. With his eponymous label launched in Beijing, China in 2012, Suen’s philosophy is capturing the essence of amusing, dynamic, and chic style. All of these elements were visible in his latest collection; fusing an aggressive metallic color palette with sophisticated functional tailoring.
Speaking to Jing Daily backstage, Suen tells us the inspiration behind the collection, which “drew inspirations of Chinese chess,” according to the official description. “It’s not only about two sides against each other, it’s also about the communication between you and your opponent, history, reality, cultures of East and West.”

With such a creative background as a painter and graphic design, what was the catalyst to pursue a career in fashion as a designer?
Intuition. There was a personal interest so that was my inspiration.
You were born in Chongqing, and lived in Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing. Do you try to bring classic Asian design for the Brits to play around with or try and steer the creative process toward what you think might sell well in the British/European market?
To be honest, I just follow my personal way and interest when creating my designs, instead of thinking too much of market’s reaction. I do hope to have a good sale and we will wait and see soon!
What is your top styling tip for the modern man today?
“Be yourself” is on the top of the priority list.
