Company Produces Selvedge Denim On Antique Levi’s Looms

The latest international brand to make its first appearance in mainland China, last week the high-end Japanese clothier 45R held a grand opening event at Beijing’s Sanlitun Village. Renowned for its premium (and incredibly expensive) denim, produced in Japan from Zimbabwean cotton on antique, pre-war Levi’s selvedge denim looms, 45R currently operates two stores in Hong Kong, three in Taiwan, two in Paris, two in New York, and nearly 50 in Japan. For the brand’s mainland China debut, 45R execs like vice president Masaki Nakajima, design director Inoue Yasumi, and creative director Masayuki Watanabe made the trip out to Beijing, marking the grand opening in the traditional Japanese style. Remarking on 45R’s decision to debut in Beijing, representative director Takahashi said that Beijing combines ancient and modern, and that the importance the city places on traditional culture fits with the brand’s mission.
The new 45R boutique in Sanlitun Village North follows the company’s traditional “forest” motif, with stalks of bamboo and Yoshino fir and cedar trunks shipped from Japan setting the theme and infusing the 1,400 square foot store with a woody fragrance. Stocking 45R’s full range of denim, accessories and apparel, 45R has spared no expense for its new Sanlitun location, with tiles salvaged from a Song Dynasty temple and an antique Parisian cash register sharing space with leather sofas by the Italian designer Henry Cuir.
