Minnesota State opens 2013-14 ranked 11th in the NCAA Division II preseason poll that the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association released Wednesday.
Notre Dame (Ohio) was rated first in the poll and followed by Nebraska-Kearney and Central Oklahoma was rated third. Besides Minnesota State at #11, other Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams in the poll include St. Cloud State at #4 and Upper Iowa at #7.
The Mavericks had two individuals rated in the top ten with junior Cody Quinn ranked second at 165 and and sophomore Alphonso Vruno rated fifth at 141.
Quinn, a Covington, Wash., native went 27-8 last year and became a two-time All-American with his third-place finish at the 2012-13 NCAA meet.
Vruno, who hails from Sandwich, Ill., was 37-8 as a freshman and earned All-America honors with a third-place finish at nationals.
Minnesota State is led by Jim Makovsky, who enters his 21st season as head coach of the Mavericks with a 235-91-3 record.
