Soon-Yi Previn has broken her silence to defend her husband Woody Allen against allegations of abuse and accused Mia Farrow, her adoptive mother, of twisting the #Metoo movement as part of a campaign of revenge.
In an interview with New York magazine, she discusses falling in love with her mother’s husband at the age of 21 and confronts accusations that Allen molested her adopted daughter Dylan Farrow.
“What’s happened to Woody is so upsetting, so unjust,” said Ms Previn, 47. “[Mia] has taken advantage of the #MeToo movement and paraded Dylan as a victim. And a whole new generation is hearing about it when they shouldn’t.”
Dylan Farrow condemned the article – written by Daphne Merkin, a friend of Allen – saying it contained “multiple obvious falsehoods” and repeating her allegation that Allen molested her as a seven-year-old.
Ms Previn had been brought to the US and adopted by Farrow and her then husband Andre Previn in 1977.

Her relationship with Allen, who is 35 years her elder, caused a scandal when it became public in the early 1990s. Farrow discovered the affair by finding naked photographs of Ms Previn at Allen’s home.
The alleged molestation of Dylan happened at about that time, in 1992.
“I understand she would be angry — don’t get me wrong, she had every right to be,” Ms Previn said of Farrow. “But she was like a sinkhole taking everything down with her.”

In the interview, she paints a picture of a cruel and heartless mother, and recounts the moment she was collected from a Korean orphanage at the age of six.
“I remember the second I laid eyes on her,” said Ms Previn. “She came to me, and she threw her arms around me to give me a big hug. I’m standing there rigidly, thinking, ‘Who is this woman, and can she get her hands off of me?’
“She didn’t ring true or sincere.”

She claimed she was slapped and hit by Farrow as she grew up with her new family in Surrey.
“She tried to teach me the alphabet with those wooden blocks,” she said. “If I didn’t get them right, sometimes she’d throw them at me or down on the floor.”
Her account is disputed by Dylan and her siblings, who accused Ms Previn of trying to distract from the allegations against Allen.

In a statement, Ronan Farrow, the journalist, described a “devoted mother” who “created a loving home”.
“But that never stopped Woody Allen and his allies from planting stories that attack and vilify my mother to deflect from my sister’s credible allegation of abuse,” he said. “As a brother and a son, I’m angry that New York Magazine would participate in this kind of a hit job, written by a longtime admirer and friend of Woody Allen’s.”
