Impact Wrestling has just lost two of the biggest team players. It was confirmed earlier today that both Abyss and Sonjay Dutt will be leaving Impact very soon. PWInsider first broke the news regarding both of their departures from the promotion today, and multiple other sources have confirmed the same. They will each be able to pursue interests outside of Impact. Pro Wrestling Sheet says that the talent working for Impact were informed of Dutt and Abyss’ departures today via email. Abyss and Dutt are two notable names from the Impact roster who have worked as on-air talent and in backstage capacities. Now that both men are finished with Impact, according to the original report, the belief is that the Impact veterans are now on their way to WWE.
Sonjay Dutt had a few different stints with Impact, but his history with the promotion dates as far back as 2003. Dutt worked as a wrestler during the early days of TNA Wrestling. He eventually became an X Division Champion. Dutt has been wrestling since 2000, and at 36 years old, he can certainly still go in the ring for years and years to come. Dutt also has experience working in the creative department, as a backstage producer, and as a commentator. Dutt has visited the WWE Performance Center for guest training sessions in the past, so the company likely sees value in bringing back Dutt as a full time trainer. Especially if WWE does add more Performance Centers soon, Dutt could work as a coach in any of the new facilities.
Meanwhile, Abyss has been one of the most loyal workers in Impact history. Abyss has worked for the promotion since 2002. He’s a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, Impact World Tag Team Champion, X Division Champion, TNA Television Champion, and he was inducted into the Impact Hall of Fame last year. Much like Sonjay Dutt, Abyss has largely stepped away from the ring in favor of working as a backstage agent and writer for Impact. Abyss does still compete in the ring though, so it is possible that he may wrestle on WWE television if he does end up working for the company. The original report stated that Abyss and Dutt’s spots on the creative team will be filled by Konnan and Tommy Dreamer.
