Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State Junior Daniel Close took home NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors after defeating No. 1 Larry Bomstad at Taylor Center Saturday.
Close was pitted against Bomstad in the 157-pound match of the Mavericks dual against St. Cloud State. Close went up 6-2 in the first period over Bomstad, a returning All-American holding a 20-1 record, and would go on to score the next four points in the match to win a 10-2 major decision.
With the win, the Ottawa, Ill. native improved his overall record to 15-4, is 9-2 against Division II opponents, 6-1 in duals, and has won 13 of his last 14 matches for the Mavericks. Close ranks second on the team with 11 decision victories this season.
Close and the rest of the Maverick wrestling team will finish their dual schedule with away matches to Northern State Thursday, and Southwest Minnesota State Friday.
