Argentina took the 9th place on this year’s World Championship. Argentina beat Czech Republic 3:1. The journalists looked closely at relationships between players from the 80’s and 2010.
The Dynasty of Argentina in volleyball seems extraordinary. But to explain it we must go back to the 80’s…
…to be more accurate – to the World Championship 1982 when Argentina won bronze medal (it was the last time when the Hosts were on the podium on the volleyball WCH) and another historical bronze medal on Olympic Games in Seoul 1988. Both success’ were achieved by similar squads: Claudio Zulianello, Daniel Castellani, Esteban Martinez, Alejandro Diaz, Daniel Colla, Javier Weber, Hugo Conte, Waldo Kantor, Raul Quiroga, Jon Uriarte, Esteban Depalma, Juan Carlos Cuminetti.
On this year’s World Championship were present: Facundo Conte, class 1989, Hugo’s son; Nicolas Uriarte, class 1990, Jon’s son and Rodrigo Quiroga, class 1987, Raul’s nephew.
But that’s not all. In South America, either on the youth and the senior level, wins (almost) always Brazil. But with the generation of ‘sons of the legends’ the situation has changed: Argentina won South American Championship Under 21 in 2008 (that has not happened since 1982) and Under 18 in 2008 and 2010 (that has never happened before). The Under 18 champion from 2008 is Ivan Castellani, Daniel’s son. Among the spikers there was Gonzalo Quiroga, :1.Rodrigo’s brother, so Raul’s nephew. Libero of Under 18 was Martin Weber, Javier’s son.
So generally almost everybody from the 80’s gave their great contrbution. We cannot forget about ‘the Greatest’, Esteban Martinez. He has a doughter: Morena Martinez is a spiker of Under 21.
