One of China’s new generation of young fashion designers, a group that includes the likes of Uma Wang, Judy Hua, Xander Zhou, Chi Zhang and Vega Zaishi Wang, Beijing native Simon Gao (高杨) recently showed off 66 pieces from his A/W 2012 collection at his hometown’s Langyuan VINTAGE (北京郎园VINTAGE). Notable attendees included Hong Kong singer Wyman Wong (黃偉文), male supermodel David Chiang, fashion blogger Han Huohuo (韩火火), fashion photographer Chen Man (Jing Daily interview) and Hong Kong actor Hawick Lau (劉愷威), giving Gao and his eponymous label SIMONGAO a visibility boost in a city now teeming with young designers.
But where Gao stands apart from many young design hopefuls in Beijing — arguably the epicenter of China’s home-grown design movement — is in the quality of his collection. Avant-garde without being gratuitously over-the-top, Gao’s designs show a mature eye for draping and texture, combining light cotton, cashmere and more exotic materials like woven feathers in designs that walk the line between art and apparel.
To promote his new collection, Gao Yang told Fashion Trend Digest this week that he plans to work with Windows Phone to make a special “Metro” app, and has additional partnerships lined up with brands like Infiniti China, Absolut and Vidal Sassoon. Gao also plans to launch his official website, www.simon-gao.com, on June 15. Definitely a designer to watch.
