Aretha Remembered: Friends Pay Their R-E-S-P-E-C-T

DETROIT, MI – As news circulated of the death of Aretha Franklin on Thursday morning, friends, fans and family from around the world began sharing their memories and tributes to the Queen of Soul. Former first lady and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, singer Smokey Robinson and John Legend were among the first to voice their respect for singer.

Franklin, the “Queen of Soul” whose rich soulful voice transcended popular music genres and touched countless generations of music lovers, died of advanced pancreatic cancer. She was 76.

Smokey Robinson tweeted, “This morning my longest friend in this world went home to be with our Father. I will miss her so much but I know she’s at peace.”

Beatles frontman Paul McCartney tweeted, “Let’s all take a moment and give thanks for the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us for many many years. She will be missed but the memory of her greatness as a musician and a fine human being will live with us forever. Love Paul.”

Her last performance was in November at the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

On Thursday morning, John tweeted that her death “is a blow for everybody who loves real music.” He said she was one of his favorite pianists.

Singer Bette Midler tweeted, “The greatest voice in American popular music has been stilled.”

Another iconic singer-songwriter, Barbra Streisand tweeted that “It’s difficult to conceive a world without her.”

“Absolute and thorough soul through and through,” tweeted jazz great Wynton Marsalis.

President Donald Trump offered his sympathies, as well, tweeting “She was a great woman, with a wonderful gift from God, her voice. She will be missed!”

Meanwhile, former first lady and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tweeted, “She deserves not only our RESPECT but also our lasting gratitude for opening our eyes, ears and hearts. Rest in eternal peace, my friend.”

Hugh Jackman recalled one of the highlights of his career was singing with Franklin at the Tony Awards.
