DALLAS, TX – A police officer, who entered an apartment thinking it was her own and then shot and killed a person inside late Thursday, will be charged with manslaughter, reported Dallas police. The victim is a 26-year-old man.
The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. Thursday at an apartment at 1210 S. Lamar St. The victim has been identified as Botham Shem Jean, according to Dallas police.
The investigation into the shooting has been turned over to the Texas Rangers, said Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall. Police also are seeking an arrest warrant for the officer, the chief said.
“Right now there are more questions than answers,” Hall said in a statement issued Friday afternoon. “We understand the concerns of the community. That is why we are working as vigorously and meticulously as we can to ensure the integrity of the case and the department is upheld.”
According to reports, the police officer, who has not been identified, went home after working a shift and was still in her Dallas police uniform. She entered the apartment, police said.
“At some point, she pulled her weapon and shot the victim,” said Dallas police Sgt. Warren Mitchell at a morning press conference.
Other officers responded to the scene and provided first-aid for the man until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officer was not injured in the incident.
Police are not indicating the circumstances for the shooting or whether the officer mistook Jean as an intruder into her home. It was not clear how the officer was able to enter the apartment.
Hall, in her statement, said that blood and alcohol samples have been taken and search warrants are being executed.
The off-duty officer involved in the shooting has been put on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Dallas police, as well as the district attorney office are investigating the shooting.
