Angus Scott-Young says he was shielded from watching his firebrand father Sam play for Queensland.
But, now emulating dad as a Reds second-rower, he admits he might have to dig into the archives for inspiration as they attempt to halt a nine-game losing run to the Waratahs.
The Reds will also be chasing their first win from three starts this Super Rugby season at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Sam Scott-Young hurled himself into everything as a Queensland Red and famously blew kisses an All Black haka as a Wallaby.
Driven to end the Reds’ horror run against their arch rivals, Angus gets goosebumps when he puts on the maroon jersey but isn’t quite following in his father’s footsteps.
“I didn’t actually watch too much of Dad playing, might’ve been a bit of a strategy from Mum to not dwell on Dad because he wasn’t the sort of player you want these days,” he laughed.
“He was a bit too aggressive. I’ve seen some illegal … interesting stuff on film.
“I might have to go back into the archives for some inspiration.”
Queensland have coupled tight losses against New Zealand sides the Highlanders and Crusaders to open their season, showing new-found grit to stay in the game despite conceding early tries.
The loss of livewire centre Jordan Petaia to a Lisfranc (foot) ligament tear for the season is another hurdle but Scott-Young is feeling good about the challenge.
“There’s been some good signs in past two weeks … we’re determined to start winning games,” he said.
Banished Red Karmichael Hunt’s first outing against his former club should also draw a crowd.
“I’m sure he’ll go well in the sky blue jersey; he slots in quite nicely in the midfield but we’ll just be treating him as another threat,” Scott-Young said.
