The Croatian defender is confident that the Reds’ exploits last season will stand them in good stead as they look to challenge for trophies again
Dejan Lovren thinks Liverpool’s squad unity and experience sees them well set to fight for silverware again this season after lifting the Champions League last campaign.
Liverpool fought on two fronts until the end of the 2018-19 season, barely missing out on the Premier League title before lifting their sixth European cup thanks to a 2-0 win over Tottenham.
A demanding schedule is in store in 2019-20 if the Reds are to challenge once again and a common concern is that a large volume of games can impact a team’s chances.
But Lovren, who is entering into his sixth season at Anfield, says he has never been more confident of success.
“With the time we’ve been playing together already and being used to this pressure with all the games week by week – every three days you play for something – we managed,” the defender told the club’s website.
“There are quite a lot of players who stayed in this team, which is quite important. If we keep this focus for the next couple of years we can reflect on last season and hopefully win many more trophies.
“We are a team with special characteristics with fantastic individual players who can change the game in a second.”
Lovren played 13 times in the Premier League and three times in Europe last season as Jurgen Klopp settled on a centre-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip.
He was one of 10 players to come off the bench in Liverpool’s most recent pre-season friendly, a 3-2 reverse at the hands of Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund.
Lovren played alongside Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson in a back four but goals from youngsters Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster weren’t enough to stave off defeat.
Despite the result and some hot weather, Lovren has been enjoying Liverpool’s pre-season in the United States.
“We adapt to everything,” he added. “It’s an important tour for us, playing against big teams.
“It will be a challenge again to play in the heat and to adapt, there are no easy opponents. But it’s about our character and we are used to it already.
“It’s brilliant, it’s always a pleasure to come to the States and see so many fans behind us. It’s a privilege to be here.”
