L’Équipe have today confirmed reporting in the Corriere dello Sport that Qatari Sports Investments Group (QSI) are interested in purchasing Serie A club AS Roma on top of their ownership of Ligue 1 leaders PSG.
Qatari investment fund experts and advisors to PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi are currently considering the viability of the purchase. The French outlet cannot confirm Italian claims of a €400m offer to buy ASR, which their current owner James Pallota has already denied.
UEFA guidelines prevent two clubs from being majority owned by the same group, according to the French newspaper, so the company that would own AS Roma in an eventual purchase could not be QSI, but there would certainly be a workaround for the Qataris in that they would merely have to create a new company vehicle.
Le Parisien add that QSI are also keeping a close eye on opportunities in the English second division, being especially interested in clubs of the “sleeping giant” nature with a pre-existing, strong brand. They cite Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa & QPR as examples.
They point out that the Qataris have an affinity for England and London, already owning Harrods.
