This afternoon, Newcastle have announced the signing of French winger Florian Thauvin from Marseille. The fee is believed to be around £13 million and sees Remy Cabella go the other way on a season long loan deal. Thauvin is believed to now be earning €3 million a year.
The 22 year old’s talent has never been in question, but his attitude and frame of mind is something which has frustrated fans throughout his years in France. After two impressive seasons in France, the player agreed to join Lille at the end of the 2012-13 season, but ended up going on strike as him and his agent looked to drive through a move to rivals Marseille, without playing a game. Thauvin set about annoying Marseille fans as well over the last two seasons as his determination and desire was once again thrown into the spotlight.
Nevertheless, Thauvin will provide much needed pace and skill on the wing and certainly looks an upgrade from fellow Frenchman Gabriel Obertan, who the 22 year old could be in line to replace in the starting eleven. With 15 goals for Marseille in under 80 appearances, amid severe competition, Thauvin also boasts an impressive record in front of goal and will hope to get on the score-sheet for Newcastle in the near future.
The player’s girlfriend Charlotte Pirroni will move to Newcastle with Florian Thauvin.
