When you picture Britney Spears in your head, chances are you're imagining her with golden blonde hair. And that's entirely fair — her light hair has been a bit of a signature since Oops!… I Did It Again came out in 2000. Since then, she's only worn dark hair colors a handful of times. This week, however, she made the change once again with her first brown shade since 2013. To say the least, it is a look.
On September 4, the singer posted a video slideshow of herself pouting and poking her tongue out with a brand-new medium-brown hair shade on Instagram. "Same faces, same dress, new hair," she captioned the post, which has already accumulated almost 3 million views and 22,000 comments. "Yes, my sister inspired me to go dark!" Of course, she's referring to younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears, who also dyed her hair from platinum blonde to a similar shade of brown back in early July.

The last time Spears's hair was even remotely this dark was six years ago, in 2013, the year she released the album Britney Jean and began her iconic Las Vegas performance residency. She darkened the hue slightly the following year before quickly returning to blonde again. Of course, I'd be remiss not to mention her black-brown hue that shocked the world during the Blackout era in the mid-2000s.
Contrary to popular belief, Britney Spears has actually been a natural brunette this entire time. Not far off from the brown color she just debuted, her natural shade is a golden-toned light brown, seen above in a snapshot from 1999 just before she went platinum for the first time. Regardless of whether she's wearing her natural light brown, her signature blonde, or something in between, she still looks ever the icon.
