Le Monde report that former French international Eric Abidal is set to be questioned by police as part of the investigation into the attack on PSG Féminines player Kheira Hamraoui on November 4.
After teammate Aminata Diallo was held in custody last week over a suspected link, investigators are now moving away from the scenario of a rivalry between two players being at the heart of the incident. Instead, a potential scenario involving the former Barcelona director taking out revenge on Hamraoui over their past relationship is taking shape.
Police have now established that the phone chip on Hamraoui’s phone had been registered under Abidal’s name, which appears to confirm that the two had a close relationship. The Versailles public prosecutor has confirmed that the former full-back will be questioned “soon”, while the possibility of his wife Hayet Abidal being also questioned is “not to be excluded”.
According to several of the PSG players who were questioned, Hamraoui called Abidal the day after the attack. Abidal was Director of Sport at Barcelona from 2018 to 2020, while Hamraoui played for the Blaugrana from 2018 to 2021.
The assault took place as Diallo and Hamraoui were driving home from a team dinner, when two masked men stopped the car at dragged the latter out, hitting her repeatedly with an iron bar causing injuries on her legs and hands. According to the two players, the attackers said: “So we’ve been sleeping with married men, have we?”
Le Monde have contacted Abidal’s lawyer, who has stated that “I have spoken with him, but for now I won’t tell you anything at all.”
