After PSG’s latest annual Champions League humiliation, this time losing a two-goal lead in Madrid to Karim Benzema’s 16-minute hattrick, a summer squad overhaul is expected. Nobody’s future, save for Achraf Hakimi, Marco Verratti and Marquinhos, is absolutely certain.
Despite being the only academy graduate to play a prominent role at the club, Presnel Kimpembe’s status has been uncertain for some time after 18 months of wildly fluctuating form. Had Sergio Ramos been fit this season, Presko might have already been pushed towards an exit, despite L’Équipe reporting after the Madrid defeat that the club plan to keep him.
However, with Mauricio Pochettino set to leave, much still depends on who PSG’s coach is next season and the size of any potential offer, with the club willing to sell large parts of their unwieldy squad having badly failed to make any major sales in the last two windows.
Chelsea are long-term admirers of the defender and teaming up once more with Thomas Tuchel, who cajoled Kimpembe into some of his best form at PSG, could be tempting for the France international, especially given his reportedly frustration over a far less-lucrative contract compared to his Paris peers.
Although Chelsea’s ownership situation adds much murkiness, the summer window could be their chance to capture the 26-year-old centre-back should the situation be sorted by then. His tendency for lapses in concentration, however, should make Chelsea fans nervous.
Chelsea’s Ligue 1 Alternatives, arguably all upgrades on Kimpembe:– William Saliba (21, CB, Marseille/Arsenal)– Nayef Aguerd (25, CB, Rennes)– Boubacar Kamara (22, DM/CB, Marseille)– Jean-Clair Todibo (22, CB, Nice)
