As reported by La Provence, led by captain Dimitri Payet, Marseille’s players held a crunch meeting with the club’s management, including new coach Igor Tudor, last night to air their concerns over the manager’s methods.
The meeting lasted around 100 minutes and opened with president Pablo Longoria addressing the squad, reminding the players of the importance of the collective and the responsibility that comes with playing for a club like Marseille. Longoria was keen not to let rising tensions get out of hand after various players had complained over Tudor’s confrontational style and extremely intense pre-season regime.
After Gerson and Cengiz Ünder both fell out with the coach, left-back Jordan Amavi was exiled from the senior squad after his own confrontation with Tudor. Club sources told L’Équipe yesterday that “Tudor is sometimes cold and he’s undone everything Jorge Sampaoli did, the style, the atmosphere, and the squad are finding it difficult to switch to the opposite extreme” while Tudor effectively told his squad when he arrived: “’You don’t run enough, you don’t work enough and you don’t play as you should.’”
The players emerged from the meeting largely looking happier but the smiles, say the local paper, had not returned to every OM face. Marseille start their Ligue 1 campaign this Sunday evening against Reims.
