WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
WWE announced that Ilja Dragunov received eight stitches after suffering a laceration above his right eye while facing Roderick Strong on last night’s NXT. Dragunov also appeared later in the show and brawled with WALTER when WALTER got involved in MSK’s NXT Tag Team title defense against Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner. Dragunov will challenge for WALTER’s NXT United Kingdom Championship at NXT TakeOver 36 this Sunday.
Last night’s NXT featured an angle where Indi Hartwell & Dexter Lumis got engaged after defeating Jessi Kamea & Robert Stone in a mixed tag match. Hartwell proposed to Lumis following the match.
NXT Cruiserweight Champion Kushida tweeted about not being able to wrestle last night: “I’m sorry for everyone who was looking forward to tonight title match. Did not cleared the medical. I can’t do anything and I’m just stunned… I promise to be back on TV soon. Thank you for your support.” Kushida was supposed to defend his title against Strong on last night’s show. Strong instead issued an open challenge and lost to Dragunov.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Samoa Joe spoke about facing Karrion Kross at TakeOver 36: “I’m looking at him, and this match as a blank slate. Kross is very different from the many people that I’ve faced. He presents a very unique challenge. He’s unlike anyone I’ve ever seen in NXT. It’s going to be something new.”
Adam Cole said during a Twitch stream that there’s a zero percent chance that his Twitch channel will ever go away: “I love you all so much. I wish so bad that I could just stream for a few more hours. But it makes me so happy to even stream for a little bit, and it’s why when I say, no matter what, there is a zero percent chance that this channel is ever going away. I will never give this up. I love it with my whole entire heart and I love you guys. That’s how important you are to me, because you guys make me feel very important. There’s been a lot going on lately, and I just want to make sure everyone knows this is going nowhere. This is going absolutely nowhere.”
Jinder Mahal, Goldberg, and WALTER & Dragunov appeared on this morning’s edition of WWE’s The Bump.
Goldberg said on The Bump that he has two matches left on his WWE contract: “I’m a great fan of both of ‘em [Roman Reigns & John Cena] for what they’ve done individually, for what Roman’s been able to do for the past couple of years is freaking unbelievable. I think it’s fantastic. I think Paul Heyman has a lot to do with that. I’d love a piece of Roman Reigns and I think maybe even more so would I love to get my hands around Cena’s throat but, it’s wishful thinking. We’ll see. Let me take care of Bobby Lashley first and then — hey, I only got one more match, or two more matches on my deal here so, we’ll see what happens”
In an interview with Bleacher Report, Goldberg discussed potentially facing Big E if he wins the WWE Championship and Big E cashes in the Money in the Bank briefcase on him: “I’d love nothing more than to get into the ring with Big E. There’s so many reasons why I’d want for that to happen, but I’m not worried about him right now. I’m worried about Bobby Lashley. Period. End of story. If there’s another chapter to that story and he shows his face or does whatever, then I’ll deal with it, but right now, my sights are completely set on Lashley.”
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Bayley vs. Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship from SummerSlam 2020, Randy Orton vs. John Cena in an I Quit match for the WWE Championship from Breaking Point 2009, and Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart vs. Dakota Kai & Raquel Gonzalez from NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day.

Jonathan Gresham told Fightful about what it means to him when people discuss him being one of the best wrestlers in the world: “For a while, I really felt weird about it because I don’t feel like I’m on that level. I believe, of course, everyone wants to be the best at their craft, but the more and more I thought about it, to be honest, I’m more so happier about that people are looking at that someone that looks like me as someone that can be best in the world. ‘Cause for years black people, people that look like me, have not been considered or in the conversations of being the best in the world. So, when I look at who the best in the world is right now, I look at guys like Lee Moriarty, Freddie Yehi, Jay Lethal. It’s great to hear my name come up so often, but also I want to put out that there’s so many other great wrestlers out there that should also be getting attention as well. So, I’m just happy that people of color are actually getting looked at in a different way now.”
Ariya Daivari appeared on Insight with Chris Van Vliet. Daivari spoke about potentially going back to WWE in the future and his five-year plan:
I think so [there’s a chance to go back]. I kind of have this five-year plan in my head because I’m 32 now. I said if I don’t go back to the WWE in the next five years, then maybe that door is closed but I still feel young, I still feel good and you just see so many guys, like I think Drew McIntyre and Jinder [Mahal] are great examples. Obviously, they’re very large men, so they have that advantage but seeing them leave WWE and let’s be honest, they were kind of at the bottom of the barrel when they left WWE and to go out there, get in great shape, reinvent themselves and then come back and have the success that they’ve had, it’s awesome to see. You know, Shelton Benjamin, The Hardy Boyz. Obviously these are all guys who are big stars but they were guys who I thought when they left WWE, I was like, ‘Ah, that’s probably it for them,’ because they’ve done everything they can do, they’re a little older now, probably not gonna come back and now to see they’ve come back and they’ve all done extraordinary work, I don’t think the door for WWE is completely closed. It might just be, right now, they’re just kind of reshuffling things and figuring things out like the whole world is doing right now.
On the Dynamite Download podcast, QT Marshall discussed why AEW Dark and Dark: Elevation are as long as they are: “I know what it’s like to be at TV and not wrestle. Luckily I have the behind-the-scenes where I’m busy and stuff but, I can’t imagine going to TV and just sitting around all day and doing nothing. You know, which is why we try to get away from that which is why sometimes [AEW] Dark is 25 matches long. We want everyone to work. It is what it is. We want you to wrestle. This is your dream and the happier you are, the better you’re going to do for us and the better the fans are gonna be and everyone wins.”
Matt Tremont is coming out of retirement to face Atsushi Onita on October 31. The match will take place in the United States and will be presented by Tremont’s H2O Wrestling and Onita’s FMW-E.
