MARSHALL, Minn. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team captured its second dual match victory of the season in dominating fashion on Wednesday night, as the Mustangs took the non-conference bout versus Morningside College (Iowa), 39-4.
SMSU took nine of the ten matches en route to the dual victory. SMSU improves to 2-0 in dual matches this season, while Morningside drops to 1-1.
Coming into the match, Morningside College was ranked No. 5 as a unit at the NAIA level.
Morningside opened the match with an open slot at 125 pounds and Travis Borchert (1-4) recorded his first victory of the season.
In the 133 pound bout, Justin Reinsma jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage with a takedown of Nathan Ryan (5-3) and never looked back as the All-American won by decision, 7-5.
In the 141 pound bout, Ethan Hildebrandt blasted out of the chute with a 3-point near fall in the early minutes of the first period. Hildebrandt would breeze to victory over Kevin Olson (4-3) by technical fall at 6:25, 20-5.
Beau Buysse would push SMSU’s lead to 17 with a pin of Taylor Phipps at 6:22 in the 149 pound match. Buysse improved his season record to 6-5.
Cody Fritz and Jordan Langley would square off in the 157 pound bout in what was the closest match of the night. Down 7-4 late in the third period, Fritz rallied to tie the score at 7-7 with an escape and takedown. Fritz would hold Ryan for the last thirty seconds to bring his riding time to over a minute long and secured the final point at the end of the match to take the bout by decision, 8-7.
Jacob Begin was perfect at 165 pounds, as Chad Morehead was denied any scoring opportunities. Begin took the match by major decision, 8-0.
Wrestling up two weight classes was the reigning NSIC wrestler of the week, as Kyle Begin took on Rulin Pederson in the 174 pound bout. Begin almost recorded his fifth straight pin, but the freshman was granted a 3-point near fall and would hold onto the win by decision, 13-6.
With a 30-0 lead, Travis Peralta took on No. 1 ranked (NAIA) Brian Block in the 184 pound bout. Peralta would take a 2-0 lead in the first period via takedown and would never trail in the bout as Peralta took an impressive win by decision over Block, 9-4.
Micah Larson capped the scoring for SMSU with a pin of Chris Ridgeford at 4:58 in the 197 pound match to secure SMSU’s ninth straight win. The win put SMSU up over Morningside 39-0.
In the final match of the night, Tyler Kacmarynski got Morningside on the board with a 13-0 major decision over SMSU’s Todd Kelmz. Morningside would record four points from the major decision to avoid the shutout.
SMSU (2-0) will travel to the Waldorf College duals this Saturday, Dec. 8, with action starting at 9 a.m.
