MINNEAPOLIS — Defending heavyweight national champion Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) and 133-pounder Tossaporn “Boyd” Suparat (SR, North Branch, Minn.) won individual titles on Saturday, leading the Augsburg College wrestling team at its Auggie-Brute Open tournament at Si Melby Hall.
Twelve Auggies earned top-five finishes and 16 of the 23 Auggies were placewinners at the tournament, which featured 19 NCAA Division III, II, NAIA and club programs, with 330 wrestlers in open competition. No team results were kept at the meet.
Johnson, the top-ranked heavyweight in the preseason National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national rankings, claimed four bonus-point victories in earning his weight class title in the Gold division, with two pins and two major decisions. He claimed a 12-3 victory over Tyler Kacmarynski of Morningside (Iowa) in the finals.
Suparat also had a strong run to his Gold division title at 133 pounds, collecting two pins and 16-0, technical-fall win en route to the championship match, where he claimed a 9-5 win over Dalton Sowers of St. John’s.
Augsburg had two individual runners-up in Gold divisions. Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho), the No. 2-ranked Division III wrestler at 149 pounds, reached the championship match in his weight class with three wins, including a major-decision triumph, but was edged 3-1 by Jordan Rinken of Upper Iowa, an NCAA Division II national tournament qualifier last season. Rashad Kennedy (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) reached the finals at 141 pounds with three wins, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Matt Paulus of Upper Iowa in the finals.
Three Auggies placed third in Gold division classes. Chad Bartschenfeld (SO, Amery, Wis.) went 3-1 to finish in third at 125. Tom Kuehn (SO, Fargo, N.D./West Fargo HS), ranked 10th nationally at 141, went 2-1 to take third, with a major decision and technical fall among his victories. Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.), ranked No. 10 nationally at 174, went 3-1 to place third, with a technical fall in his opening match.
Two Auggies went 3-1 each to place fifth in their Gold division weight classes — No. 9-ranked Mike Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.) at 125 and No. 8-ranked Tommy Teigen (JR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) at 165. Matt Hechsel (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) rallied from a first-round loss with three wins to claim consolation honors at 197.
In other divisions, Michael Keilen (FY, Stoddard, Wis./La Crosse Central HS) placed second at 149 Bronze, while Quinten Strand (FY, Viroqua, Wis./De Soto HS) placed second at 174 Bronze. Nicolas Grimley (FY, Monticello, Minn.) placed third at Heavyweight Silver. Placing sixth in their divisions were Roarke Langer (FY, Ellsworth, Wis.) at 133 Silver, Tim Hanlin (SO, Andover, Minn.) at 184 Silver and Josh Chandler (FY, Milton, Ga.) at 165 Bronze.
Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open Results
Augsburg has its first dual meet of the season on Tuesday (11/20), hosting Waldorf (Iowa) at Si Melby Hall. The White Team (junior varsity) match begins at 6 p.m., with the varsity match following at 7 p.m.
