Reno, Nevada — Minnesota State traveled to the Silver State to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions. Dubbed as the “toughest tournament in the USA,” MSU finished in 19th-place with many of the nation’s top programs represented at the RTOC.
Sophomore Drew Lexvold started 3-0 on the day with a 15-1 major decision over Glen Terrano (Utah Valley), an 8-5 decision over Zach Kechter (Appalachian State) and a pin of Kagan Squire (Ohio) at 4:43. Lexvold’s day came to an end with back-to-back losses to Michael Mangrum (Oregon State) and Avery Garner (Utah Valley).
Freshman Alphonso Vruno opened the tournament with an 19-2 tech fall over Tanner Bidelspach (Campbell) and an 18-5 major decision over Miguel Batlazer (Southern Oregon). Vruno lost back-to-back matches against Brandon Fitfield (Michigan State) 3-2 and Ian Nickell (Cal State Bakersfield) 6-4.
Freshman Thomas Allen (149 lbs) went 2-2 on the day. Allen’s wins came via pins of Scott Sakaguchi (Oregon State) at 5:33 and Dalton Kelley (Cal State Bakersfield) at 1:36.
Junior David Demo (125 lbs) went 0-2 on the day at the RTOC. Demo lost to Jerry Huff (Adams State) 8-3 and Kevin Powell (Ohio) 7-4.
Freshman Sawyer Hoffman and Alex Folk both went 0-2 in the 157 lbs weight class. Hoffman fell to Jason Luster (West Virginia) at 1:43 and lost a 6-4 decision to Bobby Ward (Grand Canyon). Folk fell to Chris Castillo (Boise State) at 0:47 and a 9-2 decision over Nico Martinez (Missouri Valley).
Cody Quinn (165 lbs) opened the tournament with a 16-0 tech fall over Connor King (Cal Poly) before dropping his next two matches. Quinn lost a 3-0 decision to Taylor West (Boise State) and was pinned by Seth Thomas (Oregon State) at 1:21.
Senior Nathan Haynes (197 lbs) fell to Taylor Johnson (Southern Oregon) at 4:30 and lost to Marshall Haas (The Citadel) 7-5 in an elimination match to end his day.
Junior Corby Running (285 lbs) lost a 6-1 decision to Peter Angiuano (Grand Canyon) and a 3-1 decision to Brendan TerWee (Stanford) in an elimination match.
Minnesota State will compete on January 12-13 in the NWCA National Duals in Springfield, Ill.
