Minnesota ends season No. 1 in final regular season USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll
With its 27-12 win over Iowa State on Sunday in Ames, Iowa, the top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-1) assured themselves of the No. 1 ranking in the final USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released Tuesday.
For the second straight week, the Gophers amassed all 10 first-place votes. The top five teams remained unchanged, as Penn State, Iowa, Cornell and Northern Iowa remained in place. The only changes in the poll overall came in the 16-22 spots as weekend losses by Iowa State and North Dakota State cause the two teams to drop.
Penn State (15-1) closed out its regular season with a 43-3 win over Clarion. Cornell finished 13-1 after beating in-state rival Hofstra 28-19.
Northern Iowa (13-0) ended the season as Division I’s only unbeaten team in dual competition. The Panthers were pushed in their last MAC dual, a 21-19 win at Old Dominion in a bout that saw UNI lose six out of 10 bouts.
The Big Ten closed the season with nine of its 12 schools ranked in the Top 25. The MAC, Big 12 and ACC each had three schools finish in the Top 25. The EIWA and Pac-12 had two, while the EWL, SoCon and WWC had one team each.
