North Dakota State Defeats UNC 29-13 for Big 12 Road Win
GREELEY, Colo.— North Dakota State University won five of the last six matches including three pins to defeat the University of Northern Colorado 29-13 in a Big 12 Conference match Sunday, Jan. 17, at Butler-Hancock Hall.
North Dakota State (1-4, 1-0 Big 12) is scheduled to host Air Force (5-2, 0-1 Big 12) at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 22, at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
Trailing 9-5 after four matches, North Dakota State 157-pound sophomore Kyle Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) started the Bison blitz by recording an exhausting four-period sudden victory-2 overtime win over Joe Grable. Grable led 3-2 after the first period, but Gliva did the only scoring in the second with an escape.
Grable gained an escape for a 4-3 lead early in the third period, but Gliva rallied with a takedown with 48-seconds left for a 5-4 advantage. Grable was able to escape with 24-seconds remaining to force overtime.
The pair went scoreless through the first three OT sessions, but Gliva recorded a takedown with 23-seconds left in the second sudden victory period for the win and trim match deficit to 9-8. Gliva improved to 18-8 overall and 1-1 in duals.
North Dakota State 165-pound sophomore Grant Nehring (Kimball, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo H.S.) wasted little time in putting the Bison ahead 14-9 in the dual. Nehring led 3-2 and turned over Keilan Torres for the pin at 55-seconds. Nehring now 3-6 overall and 2-2 in duals has gained all three wins by pin.
NDSU 174-pound redshirt freshman Blake Thompson (Clovis, Calif./Utah Valley) trailed UNC’s Tanner Davis 1-0 after two periods, but Thompson tied the score at 1-1 early in the third and recorded a takedown with 35-seconds remaing for a 3-1 decision. Thompson notched his first dual win in four tries and stands at 4-11 overall.
Seventh-ranked 184-pound senior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton H.S.) recorded his team-leading seventh pin of the season at 2:23 over Horacio Vialpando and widened the Bison lead to 23-9. Zillmer improved to 23-3 overall and 5-0 in duals this season. He extended his dual winning streak to 21 matches.
Northern Colorado’s 20th-ranked 197-pounder Trent Noon stopped the NDSU run with a 14-3 decision over Logan Paxton.
However, NDSU 285-pound junior Ben Tynan (Kennewick, Wash./Highline College) ended things on a high note with a fall at 2:35 over Brian Macchione. Tynan trailed Macchione 4-3 early, but gained a reversal to set up the pin. Tynan improved to 15-8 overall and 4-1 in duals.
North Dakota State’s 16th-ranked 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez (Guadalupe, Calif./Righetti H.S.) opened the dual with a punishing 18-3 tech fall over Jesse Reed. Rodriguez led 8-1 after one, extended the lead to 14-3 in the second. Rodriguez improved to 25-7 overall and 4-1 in duals.
Northern Colorado (1-4, 0-3 Big 12) then reeled off three straight wins as Rico Montoya defeated Nico Colunga 14-9 at 133 pounds, Colton Orrino topped Tommy Walton 10-5 at 141, and Timmy Box downed Clay Ream 9-6 at 149 pounds.
