MINNEAPOLIS — Six Gophers were recognized for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom on Thursday as the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Teams were announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hannah Brandt (women’s hockey), Jessica Flakne (rowing), Mathieu Froment (men’s tennis), Michael Kroells (wrestling), Lindsay Mable (women’s gymnastics) and Jessica Plant (women’s swimming & diving) were named to this year’s Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team with the University of Minnesota now boasting 14 total Academic All-District honorees this year. The six honorees are now eligible for Academic All-America accolades in June and will look to join Maxx Williams (football) as 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-Americans.
Kroells, a redshirt sophomore from Belle Plaine, Minn., stepped up to fill big shoes for Gopher wrestling this season — both literally and figuratively. With the graduation of Tony Nelson, two-time national champ and four-time All-American, Kroells became the Gophers’ starting heavyweight in 2014-15. In his new role, Kroells wrestled more matches (44) and more matches against ranked opponents (23) than anyone else on the Minnesota roster. In the postseason, he outperformed his seed at both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships, finishing eighth and earning All-America honors in the national tournament. Away from the mat, Kroells is an aerospace engineering major who has maintained a 3.9 GPA during his three years at the U of M. Earlier this spring, Kroells was named Academic All-Big Ten for the second-straight year.
