MINNEAPOLIS – Augustana won its third straight dual, taking down Augsburg, ranked fourth in NCAA Division III, 26-9 on Friday night. The Vikings improve their record to 9-4 on the season, while the Auggies are still reeling after an undefeated start to the season, losing their fourth consecutive dual, dropping their record to 5-4.
With action beginning at 125 pounds, TJ North again started the Vikings off on the right foot. A 10-2 major decision by the fifth-ranked wrestler gave Augustana a 4-0 lead and North a 13-0 dual record so far this season.
Morgan Engbrecht then pushed that lead to 7-0 with an 8-3 decision at 133 pounds and Jacob Anderson dominated his 141-pound opponent, earning his second major decision of the season with a 13-1 victory.
The Vikings’ lead was trimmed to 11-3 when Augsburg’s Rashad Kennedy eked out a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Shawn Hatlestad at 149 pounds. Bradyn Neises immediately responded for Augustana, notching a 6-1 decision over the 157-pound Auggie to put the Vikings up 14-3 entering intermission.
Time Weber evened his season record to 3-3 with a 6-0 decision at 165 pounds and gave Augustana a 17-3 lead. Tommy Teigen edged 174-pound Jeff Nielsen 2-0 drawing the Auggies within 11 points, but eighth-ranked Sean Derry closed the door on the comeback attempt.
Derry equaled North’s perfect dual record, pinning his Augsburg opponent in 1:53 to give Augustana a 23-6 after the 184-pound bout with two remaining. Fourth-ranked Jayd Docken held No. 2 Matt Hechsel scoreless and notched a 3-0 decision victory at 197 pounds.
Tasked with facing the No. 1 Division III heavyweight, Michael Lowman couldn’t add to the Viking lead and Chad Johnson gave the Auggies three more points with a 7-2 win. After 10 bouts and seven Viking wins, Augustana dispatched the fourth-ranked Augsburg squad 26-9.
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday when the Auggies travel to Collegeville, Minn. to take on MIAC rival Saint John’s University in dual meet action beginning at 1 p.m.
