The entire community has been saddened by the loss of local young running talent, Gabe Pacione. 18, in a car accident last weekend. Gabe was a recent graduate of Hamilton-Wenham High School and an accomplished athlete, where he was a two-time Massachusetts cross-country champion and named Boston Globe’s Co-Runner of the Year. He was recruited to Dartmouth College and was preparing to begin this fall.
The crash occurred just two miles from Pacione’s home on Grapevine Road. Pacione’s car collided with a tree just before midnight. Grapevine Road was dark and winding and slick from a rainfall earlier in the evening. Both Pacione and a childhood friend in the car were taken to Beverly Hospital. The friend was reported to have injuries of the non life-threatening variety.
Known as Gabe, Pacione’s initial sport was lacrosse but he soon decided to devote all three seasons to running. Over the year he led the Hamilton-Wenham High School Generals to numerous victories. He was the Cape Ann League Runner of the Year as a senior and the Boston Globe All Scholastic XC D2 Runner of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
The photo on this page is of Gabe running 9:28.98 at the State 2M Championship, breaking a 35-year-old Hamilton-Wenham school record.
