COBB COUNTY, GA — A Cobb County man who runs a youth mentoring business says a woman called police after she saw him driving around with two white children in his car, along with his mother. Corey Lewis documented the encounter through several Facebook Live videos, as well as his encounter with the Cobb County police officer who responded to the call. The children’s parents, who confirmed that Lewis was indeed babysitting their children, believes he was harassed because he was Babysitting While Black.
Lewis’ business is called “Inspired By Lewis,” and is headquartered in Cobb County. In the videos (one of which is posted at the bottom of this story), he describes how a woman approached him and the children after seeing them at a Subway at a Walmart and then followed them to a Murphy’s gas station.
“This lady over here is following me because I’ve got two kids in the back seat who do not look like me,” Lewis said. “She asked to see the little girl so she could ask her if she knows who I am, all because I’ve got two kids in the back seat who do not look me. This lady took it upon herself to take my plate down and call the police.
“It’s crazy. It’s 2018 and this is what I’ve got to deal with,” Lewis says.
Later videos show Lewis explaining the situation to the Cobb police officer, as well as the children telling the officer that Lewis was their after-school teacher and babysitter. The children’s parents, East Cobb residents David Parker and Dana Mango, told CBS46 they believe Lewis was harassed for “babysitting while black.”
“I said, ‘Are you saying that because there’s an African-American male driving my two white kids, that he was stopped and pulled over and questioned?’ and he said, ‘I’m sorry, ma’am, that’s exactly what I’m saying,'” the mother told the station.
