HOLLYWOOD, CA — The 2020 Academy Awards went down Sunday night, serving up one of the most historic and memorable events in the 92-year history of Oscar fashion, glitz and glamour.
In a night filled with emotional speeches and surprises, the 2020 Oscars are one to remember for generations of cinephiles to come, as South Korean film “Parasite” won Best Picture, making history in the process. Bong Joon Ho’s genre-bending masterpiece now holds the distinction of being the first foreign-language film to take home Oscars’ top prize.

Janelle Monae kicked off the 92nd Academy Awards show with an explosive number honoring the films of 2019. The five songs nominated for Best Song this year were also performed live at the awards show. Last but not least, Eminem made a surprise appearance to sing his 2002 Oscar-winning song, “Lose Yourself” from “8 Mile” — and the celebrity reactions are one for the ages.
2020 Oscars: Winners And Memorable Speeches
The South Korean film, “Parasite,” became the first foreign language film ever to win Best Picture. “I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision,” producer Kwak Sin-ae said. After her speech, the lights turned down, but with the help of Tom Hanks and the entire audience chanting for more speeches, the lights went back up.
Brad Pitt won Best Supporting Actor for his role as stuntman Cliff Booth in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The 56-year-old actor thanked his kids passionately: “This is for my kids who color everything I do. I adore you.”
Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for her role as a fierce lawyer in “Marriage Story.” The talented actress thanked her legendary parents, Dianne Ladd and Bruce Dern: “You know, some say never meet your heroes, but I say if you’re really blessed you get them as your parents. I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Dianne Ladd and Bruce Dern.”
Renée Zellweger won Best Actress for her role as the cinema legend Judy Garland in “Judy.” In her impassioned acceptance speech, she celebrated Garland as one of her heroes. “It has been a really cool reminder that our heroes unite us. When we look to our heroes, we agree,” she said. “And that matters.”
Joaquin Phoenix won his first-ever Oscar for his role as the titular antihero in “Joker.” He concluded his emotional acceptance speech with a lyric written by his late brother, River Phoenix: “Run into the rescue with love, and peace will follow.”
Hildur Guðnadóttir is the first woman to win Oscars’ Best Original Score since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences combined all of the score categories into one in 2000. In her acceptance speech, she echoed a message of encouragement to all aspiring female film composers.
“To the girls, to the women, to the mothers, to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within, please speak up,” Guðnadóttir said onstage. “We need to hear your voices.”
The South Korean director Bong Joon Ho could not believe his winning streak. After snagging Best Director, he went on to win Best International Feature on behalf of South Korea. Over the course of the evening, the talented filmmaker also took home Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture for “Parasite.”
“After winning the award for Best International Feature, I thought I was done for the day and was ready to relax,” Joon Ho joked.
