“The Changeover” — Timothy Spall, Melanie Lynskey, Erana James; directed by Miranda Harcourt and Stuart McKenzie
A story about family and love, “The Changeover” is based on Margaret Mahy’s best-selling YA novel of the same name.
Set in Christchurch, New Zealand, the film centers on Laura Chant (Erana James), a teenager who is still struggling to cope with the death of her father. When Laura’s single mom, Kate (Melanie Lynskey), goes to work to make ends meet, the 16-year-old is left behind to look after her little brother, Jacko (Benji Purchase).
One day Laura encounters a mysterious man named Braque (Timothy Spall), who suddenly takes a special interest in Jacko. As the story unfolds, Braque manifests himself as an evil spirit threatening their family’s peace and quiet. In the process, Laura discovers her supernatural powers and will now have to race against time to save her brother from dark forces. Will she prevail?
See it. Though the final act is somewhat muddled, the movie, overall, is worth a trip to the theaters.
