WASHINGTON, DC — Attorney General William Barr is testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday in what could be a dramatic showdown after the release of a letter from special counsel Robert Mueller accusing Barr of understating the weight of the report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Democrats have accused the attorney general of spinning the investigation’s findings in President Donald Trump’s favor, and Mueller himself wrote in a letter that Barr “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the report.
Republicans have a majority in the Senate and close Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, has declared Mueller’s report a closed issue.
Barr is also invited to appear Thursday before the Democratic-led House Judiciary panel, but the Justice Department said he would not testify if the committee insisted on having its lawyers question the attorney general.
