ORLANDO, FL — As President Trump prepares to launch his re-election bid in Orlando Tuesday night, his political opponents are planning a launch of their own.
“We did it! Baby Trump is coming to Orlando,” heralded a GoFundMe page set up for the occasion. “With 167 small-dollar donors in under 24 hours, we raised enough funds to bring Baby Trump to Orlando.”
Organizers raised $4,230 to bring the Thanksgiving-style balloon to Orlando’s Win With Love Rally from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The counter-Trump rally is set to take place outside the Stonewall Bar Orlando, which is an LGBTQ bar about .4 miles away from the Amway Center where the president will make his announcement for the 2020 election. The Stonewall is located at 741 W Church St. in Orlando.
“We plan to win with love, and we love baby Trump,” said the GoFundMe, which also raised enough money to provide real-time captioning and translation services for the alternative rally.
In addition to Baby Trump, the president is also facing a crowded field of two dozen Democrats that includes former Vice President Joe Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, who are all jockeying to face the president in next year’s general election.
The balloon made a repeat visit to Parliament Square earlier this month in honor of the president’s visit to the United Kingdom.
It represents a larger than life interpretation of what the president’s critics imagine he might look like as an adult baby, replete with orange skin, diaper, scowl and comb-over.
Meanwhile, the Trump campaign set a goal of raising $7 million by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, according to an email solicitation from his re-election campaign.
“I want to do something so ‘HUGE’ to launch 2020, even Democrats and the Fake News won’t be able to ignore,” said the email attributed to the president.
GoFundMe is a Patch business partner.
