Five highlights from the FIFA 19 Global Series PlayStation play-offs

Posted on September 8, 2019 by FASHIONISLANDBLOG

Every competitor for the FIFA eWorld Cup has been decided and there is a firm favourite from Argentina

We now know all the competitors for this year’s FIFA eWorld Cup finals. The FIFA Global Series PlayStation play-offs have now decided the final 16 players who will be joining the Xbox division in London.

In Berlin, 64 of the world’s best players battled it out with the aim of securing the first place prize of $75,000 and the 1,800 FIFA Global Series Points which would be crucial to qualification for the FIFA eWorld Cup.

There were a lot of big names in danger of missing out so it was all to play for in the penultimate event of the season.

FC Basel’s Nicolas “Nicolas99fc” Villalba came into the tournament as the number one seed with FIFA eWorld Cup qualification already secured, but the favourite was never going to go easy on the competition.

The Argentine won the Global Series Play-offs event last year and did it once again for FIFA 19, defeating Lev Vinken 2-1 in a tense grand final to add yet another trophy to his collection.

It was not an easy route to get to the final either as he had to go though Stefano “Pinna97” Pinna, Mohammed “MoAuba” Harkous and Flavio “Fifilza” Brito.

In the weeks leading up to the play-offs, Nicolas99fc told Goal that he does not train very often but is intense when he does – looking for even the smallest of mistakes to fix.

Clearly, it is working as Nicolas99fc has dominated tournaments for the second year running. He has been practicing on Xbox so perhaps this could be the year that he finally goes all the way.

While he did eventually fall in the final, LevVinken can be proud of his sensational performance in the knockout stages.

The Dutchman had been a free agent for the majority of the season but recently signed with esports organisation Mkers and repaid their faith with huge wins over Shaun “Shellz” Springette and Diogo “Tuga810” Pombo to reach the final.

LevVinken has been in inspired form this season and has done well to climb into the top five in the rankings. He could be one to watch at next month’s FIFA eWorld Cup.

For the first time in his career, North’s Marcus “Marcuzo” Jorgensen has failed to qualify for the biggest FIFA tournament of the year.

His 3-2 defeat at the hands of Fnatic Roma’s Damian “Damie” Augustyniak sealed his fate, leaving him just 42 points behind 16th place Mark “FUTWIZ Marko” Brijeski.

The Dane was modest in defeat, posting on social media to say: “Can’t really be any closer, so it’s very unfortunate & heartbreaking, but that’s life sometimes. Have been a very tough year where I’ve struggled a lot, so I’m proud of my achievements this year, even though I didn’t make it to the biggest one. Deserved break coming up, and then we’re ready for next year.”

Wolves’ Fifzila secured his place in the top 10 following a very strong showing at the play-offs. The Brazilian was scoring for fun with 6-2 and 8-2 wins in the knockout stages before he was eventually held by Nicolass99fc in the semi-final.

It was a tough pill for him to swallow, coming awfully close to his tournament win.

To cheer him up, Wolves recorded a video message from club legend and record goalscorer Steve Bull, who told the Brazilian to keep his head up and that the knockbacks will only make him stronger.

The PlayStation FIFA Global Series Rankings were tightly contested and as a result, some of the biggest names in FIFA 19 have missed out on a place in the FIFA eWorld Cup. As well as Marcuzo, his team-mate August “Agge” Rosenmeier also failed to qualify as he also lost in the Round of 32.

Damie, who knocked out Marcuzo, also failed to qualify as the Polish player was defeated by MoAuba in the next round.

Maltese player Christian Spiteri had a sensational showing, upsetting multiple pros but reaching the quarter-finals was not enough.

On top of that, one of North America’s strongest competitors, Cormac “Doolsta” Dooley, will also be absent from the FIFA eWorld Cup. The Philadelphia Union player is a multiple eMLS champion but once again he faltered at an international tournament, winning just one game in the group stages.

Finally, a lot of eyes were on Shellzz, who is regarded as one of the best around, but the Englishman had a tough start to the season. The Manchester City player was in great form and made it through to the Round of 16 but a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to eventual-finalist LevVinken ended his season.
