“Chairman Chic” On Display At the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology
As the following video shows, some student designers have adapted the famous Zhongshan suit (aka “Mao suit”), popularized in China in the years following the dissolution of the Qing Dynasty.
This fashion show reflects a broader trend in China’s more cosmopolitan cities. As young Chinese designers look to carve out a niche and create fashion “with Chinese characteristics” that can counter the dominance of European, American, and Korean fashion in China, more fashion shows — like the one recently held at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology — are starting to showcase unique adaptations of traditional Chinese style.
