China’s quietly booming mass contemporary fashion market, while less glitzy and glamorous than its luxury counterpart, continues to entice an ever-increasing number of designers to debut new lines in Beijing or Shanghai rather than Paris or New York. Most recently, New York-based San Francisco native Derek Lam chose Shanghai rather than the Big Apple to launch the new Resort collection for his diffusion label, 10 Crosby.
Held in partnership with Shopbop — which launched its Chinese-language site last year — Lam showed off his new 10 Crosby collection at a “New York-style” party at Unico restaurant on the Bund. Available exclusively online, the Shanghai debut was 10 Crosby’s most overture gesture to the China market to date.
While Derek Lam is not the first to choose Shanghai for a global launch — Swatch kicked off its Kidrobot collection there last year — he is undoubtedly one of the best and brightest fashion designers to do so. And with plenty of leading local media figures and popular bloggers in attendance, the event garnered valuable attention on Sina Weibo, which bodes well for the collection’s chances in China.
