After making her Paris Fashion Week debut in the spring of 2012, Chinese fashion designer Masha Ma presented her new ready-to-wear S/S 14 collection last week in the French capital. Women’s Wear Daily had this to say about the collection:
Establishing herself quickly after graduating London’s Central St. Martins in 2008, Ma’s career has taken off since her graduate collection was shown at London Fashion Week and snatched up by London’s hip B Store. Today, she enjoys attention from the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and found a major fan in Lady Gaga, who wore one of her pieces to meet U.S. President Barack Obama.
Unlike some Chinese designers, Masha Ma’s work rarely highlights its Chinese heritage, and she was recently quoted saying, “I care more about ‘where it will be’ rather than ‘where it comes from.’” As a recipient of many accolades for her sophisticated and architectural ready-to-wear designs, Ma is a major driving force in the movement to reclaim the quality of the “made-in-China” image.
