When Xander Zhou showcased his much-anticipated Autumn/Winter 2016 designs at London Collections: Men earlier this week, the catwalk was veiled by the loss of a global icon. Hours before the show, the news of David Bowie’s death was announced, and the organizers made a last-minute decision to change the closing song to Bowie’s “Heroes” in a tribute celebrating expressions of creativity.
Zhou’s own creativity shines through in not only his collections, but his involvement and influence throughout the fashion industry in China. Born and raised in China, Zhou established his label in Beijing, and since 2015, has served as the men’s fashion director of the newly launched Chinese edition of T Magazine. A permanent fixture at London Collections: Men since its inauguration in 2012, Zhou presented a full-bodied, gender-neutral collection with attitude.
Jing Daily squeezed in a few moments with the designer after the show to learn more about the collection.

What was the theme for this collection?
The collection is based on the idea of “diversity.” It’s a different way of seeing things, a different take on aesthetics, and sexual open-mindedness.
Why did you chose London as a focal point?
London is my second home. It’s a is very exciting place to be with new designers and talent, and a great place to showcase fresh ideas to people and get inspiration.
Today is a somber day with the passing of David Bowie. “Heroes” was your closing song, so his death must of had an impact on you.
Of course. I woke up this morning to the sad news and it touched me deeply. He was a legend, an icon and he meant a lot to me, and I couldn’t not show a sign of respect for him. I still can’t believe it.
